Module Description: Introduction to Bharatanatyam Dance
This theoretical-practical module offers an introductory immersion in Bharatanatyam Dance, combining history, technique and spirituality. We will explore its historical origins and its preservation over time, highlighting its connection to a sacred lineage that has maintained its freshness and relevance in the spiritual realm. On a technical level, we will delve into fundamental aspects such as traditional postures (Karanas), basic steps (Adavus), hand gestures (Hastas), invocations and ritual bows (Slokam and Namaskaram), along with flexibility exercises and emotional exploration through expressions (Rasas).
About Bharatanatyam:
Bharatanatyam, one of the oldest and most revered forms of classical Indian dance, is considered the origin of many other dance traditions in the country. Originally a solo dance performed by the Devadasis —dancers dedicated to the service of the divine in Hindu temples in the state of Tamil Nadu—Bharatanatyam has evolved while maintaining its essence in South India. Its theoretical foundation is based on the “Natya Shastra,” a classical Sanskrit treatise that sets out the principles of performing arts. This dance form not only communicates religious themes and spiritual ideas of Hinduism, but is also noted for its impeccable technique, which integrates sophisticated footwork and a wide range of expressive gestures. It is structured around three essential components: Nrita (pure movement), Nritya (expression and gestures), and Natya (the synthesis of movement and expression to achieve transcendental states).
