This theoretical and practical module serves as an introduction to Bharatanatyam Dance. We will explore its historical origins and how it has retained its freshness and spiritual value through a sacred lineage. We will delve into technical training covering aspects such as poses (Karanas), basic steps (Adavus), hand gestures (Hastas), invocations and bows (Slokam and Namaskaram), flexibility work and expressions (Rasas).
About Bharatanatyam: Possibly the oldest classical dance form of India, Bharatanatyam is considered the precursor of many other classical dances in the country. Originally a solo dance performed by Devadasis (female dancers in the service of art) in Hindu temples in Tamil Nadu, this dance form has developed extensively in South India. Its theoretical foundation is based on the "Natya Shastra", an ancient Sanskrit text dealing with the performing arts. Expressing Hindu religious themes and spiritual ideas, this dance is noted for its exceptional footwork and expressive gestures, including elements such as Nrita (physical movements), Nritya (gestures and expression) and Natya (the integration of both to achieve sublime states).
