MODULE 1
The origin and lineage of Bharatanatyam Dance

Bharatanatyam, arguably the oldest classical dance heritage of India, is considered to be the mother of many other Indian classical dance forms. Conventionally a solo dance performed only by the Devadasis (Dancers in Service of the Art), it was started in the Hindu temples of Tamil Nadu and eventually flourished in South India. The theoretical basis of this form can be traced back to "Natya Shastra", the ancient Hindu Sanskrit text on the performing arts. A form of anecdote illustrating Hindu religious themes and spiritual ideas emoted by the dancer with excellent footwork and impressive gestures, through its component elements of Nrita (physical steps), Nritya (gestures and expression) and Natya (the union of both transporting the dancer to know sublime inner states) .

This module provides an analysis and research into the History of Bharatanatyam Dance.

It also includes a methodology that proposes tools to encourage human beings towards a goal beyond knowing this dance as a physical practice, to heal physical or psychological symptoms. It provides tools that make it possible to transcend suffering and reach the core of joy, beauty, peace and harmony.

We will begin to learn about the history of the Classical Indian Dance of Bharatanatyam. We will learn chronologically about its origin from the myths to how it is established in the evolution of history, as well as discovering the work of the Davadasis (servants of God) and how they developed and safeguarded the great value of dance.

DEVOTIONAL ART:
FIFTH VEDA, NATYA SHASTRA

The instructions of the Natyashastra were established through centuries of practical theatrical work. The compilation of this treatise probably dates back to the 2nd century AD, although the tradition formulated in it was older.

In this Dramaturgical treatise, the structure of this dance is born as a tool for self-realization. It provides the instructions to successfully carry out the performance: a class, rituals, space arrangement, costume, makeup , behavior of the disciple, mental states, among others...

  • Group 4: Thai Thai Thaam Adavu (basic steps).

  • Hastas: Asamyuta Hastas (Mudras/One-handed gestures).

  • Repertoire: Angikam Bhuvanam yasya - Shiva Shloka (Choreography dedicated to the Deity Shiva)

3.1. Nritta: Study of body movement pattern “Adavus”

3.2. Natya: The study of gestures and facial expressions

3.3. Nritya: The particularity of rhythm, dance, dramatic expression, and levels of consciousness

  • Group 6: Theermanam Adavu (basic steps).

  • Hastas: Samyukta Mudra (Mudras/Gestures with two hands).

  • Repertoire: Angikam Bhuvanam yasya - Shiva Shloka (Choreography dedicated to the Deity Shiva)

To complete and formalize each year of study within the Bharatanatyam training program, it is suggested to visit and do the exclusive training in India. Where you will have the advantage of knowing its place of origin; immersing yourself in its atmosphere and mystical culture. Visiting sacred temples (Chidambaram Nataraja Temple, Khajuraho Temple...) getting to know in more detail about the routine, the experience and the connection that is generated from disciple to guru.
