One of our favorite moments before dancing is getting ready.

It is not simply about dressing up; it is a sacred ritual that invites us to leave everyday life behind and enter a state of presence and devotion. It is also a moment of togetherness, where we help one another, share smiles, adjust every detail, and remember that we walk this path as one.

In the Bharatanatyam tradition, the ancient Devadāsīs prepared themselves with great care before appearing before the deity. The sacred tradition teaches that the body is a temple, and adorning it is a way of honoring the Divine. We do not beautify ourselves out of vanity, but because every detail becomes an offering of respect, beauty, and love before the dance begins.

Each element carries a deeper meaning:

🌺 The saree represents dignity, grace, and reverence toward both the dance and the deity. Wearing it reminds us that we are about to offer something sacred through our art.

💄 The makeup enhances abhinaya (expression), allowing every emotion, story, and feeling to be seen clearly, even from a distance.

💎 The jewelry symbolizes the inner richness and radiance of the Divine. Traditionally, it reminds the dancer that she becomes a vessel through which the sacred is expressed.

🔴 The bindi represents the Ajna Chakra, the center of intuition, wisdom, and spiritual awareness, inviting us to keep the mind focused and present throughout the performance.

🤍 The jasmine flowers symbolize purity, devotion, and the fleeting beauty of life. Their fragrance accompanies the dance as an offering and has long been considered a sign of auspiciousness.

🤲 Helping one another is also part of the ritual. Adjusting a saree, placing a piece of jewelry, or arranging the jasmine flowers becomes an act of love, service, and community that strengthens the spirit of the group.

P.S. These are some of the most beautiful moments before dancing in the temple, especially in a temple dedicated to Narasimha. They are moments of silence, joy, and inner preparation that remind us that the dance begins long before the first note is played.

In the first speed, Tattu Adavu is practiced slowly and with complete awareness. The dancer strikes the floor with the full foot in synchronization with the rhythm while maintaining a stable araimandi, an upright spine, and steady breath.

This practice develops:

Pneuma Dance will take part in one of the most important international congresses: the World Congress on Dance Research, organized by the International Dance Council (CID) of UNESCO.

There, we will deliver a lecture on the articulated and interconnected aspects involved in the study of Transpersonal Psychology and its therapeutic application to Bharatanatyam dance — a dance form that explores in depth its profound physical, mental, and spiritual benefits. The talk aims to contribute to the holistic development of the dancer, and will be accompanied by a workshop to explore this discipline further.

We will have the honor of presenting at the Dora Stratou Theatre, where the students of Pneuma Dance will perform three pieces from the choreographic repertoire of Shamti Ruiz Nambiar.

In addition, the studies taught at Pneuma Dance are recognized by CID-UNESCO. For this reason, a special recognition will be given to the students who have completed their first year of training in Bharatanatyam dance.

Ganesha: Guardian of Wisdom and New Beginnings

Ganesha, also known as Ganapati, is one of the most beloved and revered deities in the Hindu tradition. Recognized by his elephant head and human body, he is honored as the remover of obstacles, the patron of wisdom, and the guardian of all new beginnings.

For this reason, Ganesha is traditionally invoked before starting any important undertaking — whether a day of study, a spiritual practice, a journey, a marriage, an artistic performance, or a new project. His presence symbolizes clarity, protection, and the ability to move forward with intelligence and purpose.

According to Hindu mythology, Ganesha is the son of Shiva and Parvati. Beyond the story itself, this relationship carries profound symbolic meaning. Shiva represents pure consciousness, while Parvati embodies Shakti, the creative and dynamic energy of the universe. Ganesha arises from the union of these two principles, symbolizing the harmonious integration of consciousness and energy.

In several Tantric traditions, Ganesha is associated with the Muladhara Chakra, the root energy center. This chakra is connected with stability, grounding, security, and the latent spiritual potential that resides within every human being. For this reason, Ganesha is often regarded as the guardian of the threshold of spiritual development, helping practitioners establish a strong foundation before progressing further on their path.

His symbolism also reflects qualities essential for both spiritual and everyday life. His large ears remind us to listen deeply. His elephant head represents wisdom, strength, and discernment. His trunk symbolizes adaptability and the ability to respond appropriately to different situations. Together, these attributes teach us how to approach life with balance, patience, and awareness.

Rather than representing only a distant deity, Ganesha can also be understood as a universal principle within ourselves: the intelligence that helps us overcome inner obstacles, cultivate clarity, and begin each new step with confidence, wisdom, and purpose.

Thousands of years ago they already knew what we keep forgetting today: nothing blossoms without consistency.
In Bharatanatyam this shows with an almost brutal clarity. There's no way to fake it. The body reveals exactly how many hours you've given it. The one who practices, you can tell. The one who skips, you can tell too.
And here comes the uncomfortable question: we almost always say "I don't have time." But time for what we love always appears. What's missing isn't time — it's priority. Saying "I don't have time to dance" is, deep down, saying "today I didn't put myself on my list."

The good news is that consistency gives what no single day ever can: a body that remembers, a calm that can't be bought, and the quiet certainty that you're keeping a promise to yourself.

Why is Sacred Dance different?

Because it is not born merely from the desire to express oneself, but from the longing to remember who we truly are.

Within the traditions of Yoga and Indian Classical Dance, dance has long been regarded as a path of union between the human and the Divine. Every gesture, mudra, gaze, and movement becomes a conscious offering. It is not simply an art form—it is presence, contemplation, and devotion in motion.

The Bhagavad Gita reminds us that every action can become yoga when it is performed with awareness and offered with sincerity. From this perspective, sacred dance transforms movement into a spiritual practice, where emotions, thoughts, and actions are elevated toward a deeper purpose.

Throughout history, temple dances emerged as acts of reverence and worship. Dancers were not merely telling stories; they were embodying higher states of consciousness—the love of Radha, the courage of Durga, the wisdom of Saraswati, or the devotion of Hanuman. Each archetype revealed a timeless force that lives within the human soul.

Sacred dance invites us to discover that these archetypes do not exist outside of us, but within us. Through music, breath, silence, and movement, we begin to perceive a more subtle dimension of our being.

🩰 The technique:
The dancer stands in araimandi — knees bent outward, heels together, toes pointing outward in a straight line. The back remains tall and straight, shoulders relaxed and aligned.
The arms are held in natyarambhe: extended to the sides at shoulder height, palms facing down, fingers straight in pataka hasta (flat hand gesture).
From this position, the dancer strikes the floor twice with the same foot in rhythm with the sollukattu — right, right / left, left — alternating between sides, while maintaining the posture, the gaze forward, and the breath steady.

Tattu Adavu 2 builds upon the foundation of the first variation, refining control, coordination, and rhythmic accuracy — essential qualities for every dancer of Bharatanatyam.

The Language of Emotion: Dance & the Rasas ✨

Every dance begins long before the first movement — it begins in a feeling. Before the body speaks, something stirs within: a state of being that asks to be shared. 💫

In life, we constantly feel emotions, yet we often don’t know how to express them. Dance gives us a language to experience them fully — to digest them, understand them, and connect with them through the body.

This is the world of the Rasas. 🌸
In Sanskrit, rasa means “essence” or “flavor” — the emotional experience that art evokes and the heart tastes.

The nine principal Rasas — the Navarasa:
💗 Shringara — love & beauty
😊 Hasya — joy & laughter
😢 Karuna — compassion & sorrow
🔥 Raudra — anger
⚔️ Vira — courage
😨 Bhayanaka — fear
😖 Bibhatsa — disgust
✨ Adbhuta — wonder
🕊️ Shanta — peace

The deep, lasting emotions are called sthayibhava, expressed through abhinaya — the art of expression through face, hands, eyes, and body.

For just as we live within an inner state, it is from beauty that we express that very state. When the dancer doesn’t perform an emotion but truly inhabits it, the gesture becomes an offering. 🙏

In that moment, dancer and audience meet in a shared feeling — and the emotion, once private, becomes universal.
That is the gift of the Rasas. 🪷

Myth tells us that, between the dissolution of one universe and the birth of the next, Vishnu reclines upon the eternal waters, holding the cosmos within himself. It is the sacred moment of Pralaya: the rest between cycles, when all returns to the Source and awaits rebirth. 🌌

Vishnu rests upon Shesha, the thousand-headed serpent of infinity, floating on the Kshira Sagara, the primordial ocean of milk. He does not sleep, he meditates the universe within. 🐍

Parvati ci accompagnerà in un cammino verso il riconoscimento della nostra forza interiore. Il Viaggio dell’Anima è un recital che percorre il Margam, il repertorio tradizionale del sud dell’India, portato in un tour internazionale fino a Roma. Ogni coreografia racconta la storia di divinità, miti e archetipi, svelando il profondo simbolismo che guida la filosofia del Bharatanatyam.

Ispirato all’Atman — l’essenza eterna dell’essere —, lo spettacolo trascende l’aspetto estetico per offrire un’esperienza spirituale e contemplativa. Ogni gesto, postura e mudra diventa un linguaggio che risveglia emozioni profonde, forza interiore e devozione, invitando il pubblico a connettersi con la propria essenza più autentica.

Interpretato dalla ballerina Shamti Ruiz Nambiar, con coreografie del suo guru Smt. Gayathri Keshavan, il recital rappresenta un ponte tra tradizione, arte e spiritualità, offrendo un’esperienza unica per tutti coloro che desiderano immergersi nella cultura e nella danza classica indiana.

The Journey of the Soul is a scenic exploration of the traditional Bharatanatyam repertoire, one of the oldest and most deeply structured classical dance forms of South India.
This performance reveals how philosophy, myths, and archetypes become a symbolic map to understand our inner world. Every gesture, posture, and expression invites the audience to recognize themselves—dance becomes a mirror of the soul.

Performed by Shamti Ruiz Nambiar, Mexican artist and director of Pneuma Dance, this work brings an ancestral tradition closer to contemporary audiences, while remaining faithful to its technique, aesthetics, and codified language, passed down through the guru–disciple lineage.

The recital follows the traditional margam structure, featuring choreographies by Smt. Gayathri Keshavan, renowned dancer and director of the @academyofbharatanatyam in Bangalore, India, preserving the purity and depth of this ancient art form.
Throughout the evening, the audience is guided to discover the symbolism embodied in archetypes and deities such as Ganesha, Shiva, Durga, and Krishna. Through these figures, sacred stories unfold while reflecting the inner journey of the human being—the longing for connection, transformation, and the awakening of consciousness toward our essential nature. Each choreography becomes a gateway to introspection and expansion of awareness.

Trained under the guidance of her teacher, Shamti presents both traditional repertoire and original works, creating a living bridge between tradition, devotion, and contemporary performance.

We are excited to share this recital in Italy, Spain, Greece, and Mexico—a journey of the soul across borders.

1. Pray before your practice or performance.
Offer your dance with devotion (bhakti), as a sacred act.

2. Recognize the divine that lives within you.
Dance is a bridge between your essence and the sacred.

3. Care for your body, mind, and emotions.
Nourish them consciously, for they are the instruments of your art.

4. Meditate.
Inner silence allows movement to arise from truth.

5. Honor and acknowledge your own effort.
Every step on your path deserves respect and gratitude.

6. Never stop studying and practicing.
The art of dance is an endless path of learning.

7. Share what you have learned.
Knowledge grows when it is shared with generosity—by helping a fellow dancer, offering your dance to others, or dedicating it to the Divine.

8. Through dance, allow love and higher emotions to arise.
Dance awakens joy, devotion, compassion, and connection with others.

9. Do not criticize or judge others.
Each dancer has their own process and their own time to evolve. Respect and support one another.
